Heberlein and Keisner

My great grandfather, Charles Heberlein b1831, migrated from Germany to England in about 1860. He was married to Christiana Keisner 1834-1890. Can anyone tell me where either of these families may have come from in Germany, so that I can do further research?

You should start my searching through immigration records. Knowing a person's name and birthdate should bring up some record. From there you should get a place that they immigrated from. Granted, it usually helps to have the full birthday and not just the year. Also, if you have older relatives that are still alive, ask them. They usually know more than what they mention in passing.

Also, is it really Charles or was it Karl? Charles is English, Karl is German.

Just doing a little search, I found these:
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X3PD-L8J
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/X3PD-X2K

On the Ancestry website I found a previous census (1871) that has Carl Heberlein (born abt 1830) that is married to a Christiana Kirshner (born abt 1834) living at Mile End Old Town. The children listed are Emily, Ludwig, Emma, Ida, and Agnes and there are three other people in the household with different last names. For Carl Heberlein Senior, the birthplace is listed as Saxony (Kingdom State), Germany.

That's all I can find on any of the sites I use.

Hi Roger,

the two links NsaneLilMunkey (NLM) has given are from the 1881 census.
They seem to be both for the same family, although on different pages 15 und 34 ??

Both pages describe the household of a Chas [= Charles] Heberlein (both at the same address in Mile End Old Town)
Page 15 says born in Jamaica geboren, Page 34 says Germany
Page 15 says Wife is Katherina, Page 34 says Krisetena
Page 15 says children are Wm [=William], Lusi, Ada, Annie, Lusi
Page 34 says children are Wm [=William], Laer, Ada, Annie, Lizzie

In 1881 William is 23, so the oldest child that NLM found in 1871 has probably now married and left home.

To me it looks like the same family has been enumerated twice, by different people and each mis-heard the names (strong german accents maybe ??).

Just a thought: I'm wondering if they came from Hesse-Nassau (in Germany), and the enumerator thought "Nassau ?? that's in Jamaica !!"

regards,
Bob

ps yes, I know Nassau is in the Bahamas, not in Jamaica, but the enumerator may not have known that ....
and it is only a speculative thought from me :D

pps. I've just checked on another forum: it can happen that some addresses got enumerated twice. Usually they were weeded out when transferring the results from the household returns to the enumerators' books but they sometimes missed a few :)

Again, from another forum:

Just on the off-chance: Do you have NEWPORT in your family names ??

There is a Maria HEBERLEIN (Sister in Law) enumerated at the "Jolly Gardener" in London 1871 ....

Thank you nsanelilmunky and Bob. Sorry not to have replied earlier. This is definitely my family and the Saxony origin is just what I had hoped for. I will follow it up as soon as I have more time. Thank you for your assistance.
