Meaning of surname "Kamann"

I wonder where surname Kamann comes from. The family roots are supposed to be located in the areas of Soest or Hamm in Germany.

This name is not unusual for Westfalia and I came about it in our town too. The name is the shortened form of "KAMPMANN". The meaning for "Kamp" is just "field", so Kampmann or Kamman(n) indicates a house beneath a field. A lot of German family names just tell where a farm laid, wether within a settlement, near a bridge or a wood and so on.
