Historical center or Museums in Darmstadt area

  • Hello,
I hope this is the correct forum for this query. I will be in the Darmstadt area Sept. 20-21 and I'd like to know if there are any museums or historical centers that I could visit to get a better appreciation of what life was like in the 1600s - 1800s. I'm specifically focusing on Gross-Bieberau, but since I haven't yet found anything in that area, I thought I'd expand my area of focus to include Darmstadt as well.

I'm not as interested in castles simply because I'm sure my ancestors didn't live in one!

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

  • Hello Karen,

    perhaps something like this: http://www.hessenpark.de/index.php?id=english
This is located north of Frankfurt, so it may be too far away. Anyway I guess this would be the best choice for an overview in rural daily life.

There are similar museums in smaller towns around Darmstadt. You will find an overview here, but the page seem to be in german language only:
http://museen-in-hessen.de --> Choose "auf der Landkarte" and then "Kreis Darmstadt-Dieburg" in the map – which is about the third area from the bottom.
    e.g. http://www.museum-reinheim.de/13916.html
    or this: http://www.khvr.de/museum
or http://www.rolf-tilly.de/veste/museum/index.htm -> this is within a castle, but showing the life of "normal" people -
pay attention to the opening hours, many small museums only open sunday afternoon or are generally closed in September

Do you know that Darmstadt is famous for Jugendstil (Art Deco) Architecture (lookup "Darmstadt Jugendstil, Mathildenhöhe") - I know this is not what you are looking for, but perhaps interesting, too.

  • Thank you very much, Micha. This is just what I was looking for. I will have a car, so Hessenpark will not be too far.

And I do like Art Deco, so if I have time I will try to look into that as well. :)
