Where is the Imperial Archive where the coats of arms were kept by the HRE?

In a 1833 book by Gottlieb Masch, a story is told how Baron v. Schwan presented the Mecklenburg coat of arms to the Emperor and requested a confirmation so that it could be kept in the imperial archive.

Does this archive still exist? What is it called? Where is it? Etc.

I wasn't so much looking for that particular coat of arms, but rather to understand what was the process the Empire went through when a coat of arms was presented to them by a vassal state or when the emperor authorized a new coat of arms for someone, and how and where the records were kept. And of course, since the Empire ended 200 years ago, I am wondering what happened to all those records. Did they stay in Vienna or another imperial city, go to Berlin or somewhere else? Even the Herold did not come along until 1869. There are so many noble lexicons describing the coats of arms, even after the Empire ended. Where did those authors go to find the source material? It seems the coat of arms was pretty important to know who was who, almost like an identification card. There must have been some continuing administration to keep the records and respond to false claims, died out families or disowned heirs.
