Help in researching the Roggow family from Preuben

  • My 2nd great grandfather immigrated to the US March 16, 1870 from Germany. We have no information on his family line. I am hoping that someone somewhere might have information on his parents.
His name William Christian Roggow born: 27 FEB 1854 • Germany DEATH 23 MAR 1923 • Montana, USA

    He married Margaret Anna Flury
BIRTH 09 APR 1847 • Conters, Küblis, Prättigau/Davos, Graubünden, Switzerland
DEATH 24 JUN 1921 • White Sulphur Springs, Meagher, Montana, USA

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hello Debby,
obviously you are meaning Preußen (alterantive spelling; Preussen)(English: Prussia).
There is a hamlet called Roggow (zip 17309) 5 km ESE of Pasewalk where probably the surnme and your first ancestor is from. The hamlet is situated in todays German federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (in Englisch: Mecklenburg- West Pomerania).
Nowadays many Roggow-families are living all other Germany but there is still a concentration in West Pomerania close to the Polish border and maybe also behind. https://www.kartezumnamen.eu/index.php?sur=Roggow&s=Suchen
For tracing you have to find the home-place of your 2nd great grandfather. Maybe the LDS database or Google Books (input: Roggow Preußen) can give you an indication.
    Kind regards

  • Hi Debby,

You might be lucky, because the name Roggow is pretty rare. On http://www.familysearch.org (I hope you have an account; it's free), I don't find but ~800 birth entries (excluding those from North America). If you limit the period to 1840 to 1870 there are only 327 entries left.

    https://www.familysearch.org/s…to=1870&count=20&offset=0

If you go through that list, you'll find that there are only a few different places, and that's what I'd focus on:

    Bredow, Pommern
    Stettin, Pommern
    Köslin, Greifswald, Pommern
    Demmin, Pommern
    Stralsund, Pommern
    etc.

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with research in that area, but I'll link your post to the Pommern subforum here.

Do you know the names of the children of Wilhelm Christian Roggow? Maybe the children were named after their grandparents.

    P. S. William is Wilhelm in German.
