Hallo Hermie,

ich habe bei RootsWeb eine (ganz) alte Nachricht aus dem Jahr 1999 gefunden, in der das Schiff "Gellert" detailliert beschrieben wird.
Außerdem ist da am Schluss auch eine Möglichkeit angeführt, wo man ein Bild in hoher Qualität beziehen kann. (Allerdings sich für Dollar !)

The Hamburg-America Line steamship GELLERT, Capt. Barends, arrived at New
York on 10 July 1877, from Hamburg 27 June, and Havre 30 June. You will
find a microfilm copy of the original New York passenger *arrival*
manifest, dated 11 July 1877, on National Archives Microfilm Publication
M237, roll 409. You can borrow a copy of this microfilm through Heritage
Quest (http://www.heritagequest.com), any LDS (Mormon) Family History Center
(Family History Library microfilm #0295773), or Interlibrary Loan. There
is an incomplete abstract of this passenger list in Ira A. Glazier and P.
William Filby, ed., _Germans to America; Lists of Passengers Arriving at
U.S. Ports_, vol. 33 (Wilmington, Delaware: Scholarly Resources, 1993),
p. 198. You will find a microfilm copy of the original Hamburg passenger
*departure* manifest, which almost certainly includes information not on
the arrival manifest (in particular, each passenger's place of last
residence in Germany), on Family History Library microfilm #0472910
(Hamburg Ship Lists, Direct Lists, Bd. 34). (The Hamburg Ship Lists are
arranged chronologically by date of departure; you will find the list for
this voyage of the GELLERT under the date 27 June 1877.)

The SS GELLERT was built in 1874 by Alexander Stephen & Sons Ltd,
Linthouse, Glasgow (yard #173), for the Deutsche Transatlantische
Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft (Adler Line), and launched on 25 November
1874. 3,465 tons; 114,02 x 12,23 x 9,83 meters (length x breadth x depth
of hold); straight bow, 1 funnel, 2 masts; iron construction, screw
propulsion, double-expansion engine, service speed 13 knots;
accommodation for 90 passengers in 1st class, 100 in 2nd class, and 800
in steerage; crew of 110.

Michael J. Anuta, _Ships of Our Ancestors_ (Menominee, MI: Ships of Our
Ancestors, 1983), p. 108, reproduces a rather murky photograph of what it
purports to be the GELLERT in its original configuration (i.e., before the
rebuild of 1881); however, the ship in this photograph bears a remarkable
similarity to the GELLERT's sister ship, the LESSING, and I do not know on
what grounds the Peabody Essex Museum, in Salem, Massachusetts, which
holds the original photograph, bases its assertion that the vessel
pictured is the GELLERT. Nevertheless, I attach a scan, in .JPG format,
of the photograph in Anuta's work; you can obtain a high-quality
reproduction of this photograph from the Peabody Essex Museum, East India
