Hesse, Darmstadt

  • Hello!

I am looking for 2 family names for genealogy in this area. Here is what I have:

Peter Sperb born in Großherzogtum Hessen und bei Rhein, Deutschland on July 27, 1833. I would like to know his parents and siblings and any other information. He was my gg grandfather who came to America from port Havre on ship Wild Wave arrival at New York, New York on 11 Apr 1857. Per https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KD7R-942 "Germans to America"

His later to be wife and some family also came to America from port Havre. Her name is Barbara Meitzler per https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/KD7M-7C5 "Germans to America" she arrived at New York, New York on the ship Splendid on 28 Nov 1856. She was born in 1834 in Hessen. My chart shows siblings as John, George, Catrina and Christine. I show her parents as being Frederick Meitzler and Christina Bruekmaun.

Any help help with information is appreciated! Danke!!

  • Hi David,

I believe that the name Bruekmaun contains at least one spelling/transcription mistake. The name could have been Braukmann, Bruckmann, Brückmann (Braukman, Bruckman, Brückman). Just keep it in mind for your future search.

  • Many Thank-yous for reading and posting!

Animei- I had seen his parents listed on that 2nd marriage and know nothing about them. Any suggestions on finding them in a census, birth, marriage, death, cemetery record?

Zimba123- Yes, as the documentation I have was told to a g uncle by a gg grandfather spelling/ transcription is suspect. Any thoughts on how to work around this issue is appreciated.

Here is a majority of the info I have on Peter Sperb: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sperb-2
Here is his 1st wife Barbara: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Meitzler-18
and her parents Frederick: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Meitzler-19 and Christina: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bruekmaun-1

I have a friend in Holland who suggested the website "Die Maus" and I have had some good fortune in receiving information from other family that was born in Bremen. With my very limited knowledge of what was happening in Germany/ Prussia during the early-mid 1800's this search is very challenging. Thank-you very much!
